[[Read Proverbs 5]]
It’s no secret that we live in a sex saturated society ..we are bombarded with the consist sexual images in print, on radio, on tv, in movies, and even the internet. Did you now the internet porn industry makes 57 billion dollars a year. there are 4.2 million sites are out there 2.5 million emails go out every day.
Conventional wisdom says its no big deal everybody is doing it. (80 percent of boys and 66 percent of girls have lost their virginity by the time they are 19 years old. ) And the view isn’t often that different in the church. We buy into conventional wisdom instead of Godly wisdom.
What does Godly wisdom say about sex? How are we as the body of Christ, Christians, how are we to view human sexuality?
vv. 1-6 — There is a warning.. against sexual promiscuity and the devastating effects
father talking to a son- (could be mother daughter, daughter father, mother son)
pay attention I’m going to share some wisdom with you. Wisdom comes from the Hebrew word skill.
(v3) Beware of the adulteress. this is a warning of sexual promiscuity of all kinds not just woman that are committing adultery. this is just one example of that. this could also be – my son watch out for the internet don’t get sucked into that temptation or – my daughter watch out for those smooth talking boys that try to get you to do things you know you aught not do.
sexual sin never deliveries what it promises.
For the lips of an adulteress drip honey,
and her speech is smoother than oil
Like Potiphar’s wife with Joseph “Come to bed with me” (Gen 39). flattering words. but look she cant deliver. the sin cant deliver what it promises
4. but in the end she is bitter as gall,
sharp as a double-edged sword.
5. Her feet go down to death;
her steps lead straight to the grave
6. She gives no thought to the way of life;
her paths are crooked, but she knows it not.
it will bring devastating effects to your life.
some of the consequences of sexual sin-
it zaps you of strength (v.9)
sexual sins can lead to diseases, destruction, lack of relationship that can last a life time. etc. it cost you money (v10).
it cuts your life short (v11).
it fills your life with regret (v12-13)
he puts it in the words of the youth who spent his life in sexual promiscuity he is grown up and he looks back of his life. (v 12-14)
talking here about public disgrace. how many times do you hear in the news about a pastor who has had an affair and now the church lie in ruins and a family torn apart.
Avoid sexual immorality like Joseph when Potiphar’s wife comes after him. he makes a B-line straight for the door. Because he knows that is the path that is the way to wisdom. Flee! (1 Cor 6:18)
Let’s turn this around now and focus on the positive- far to often people think that Christians have this prudish view on human sexuality. nothing could be or should be from the truth.
The bible has a lot to say about sex
v15-19 talks of sex by God’s design.
God has designed sex. God has given sex as a precious gift to be enjoyed in the context of covenant marriage between a husband and a wife.
Sex is not a bad thing it is a great thing. its not an after thought. God didn’t just think “oh yeah. i have to figure out a way to re-populate” its not just about pro-creation (although that is a part of it). (Gen 2:24&25) God gave humans the sexual relationship not just to re-populate the earth but so that a man and his wife could enjoy the deepest level of human intimacy in their commit to one another.
CS Lewis once wrote “Pleasure is God’s invitation not Satan’s” God gave husband and wife that gift of sex to enjoy.
This is wisdom. Do not put yourself in the position to have to explain why you didn’t save yourself for your spouse. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be there on your wedding night and say “I have saved myself JUST for YOU” and knowing you have waited for God’s best.
The emotional consequences and spiritual consequences can be devastating if you don’t wait for God’s best.
(v20) why sacrifice God’s best for a temporary pleasure that only brings pain. Don’t do it. Wait. And Enjoy God’s Best.
(v21-23) The point is God sees it all. Flee like Joseph from it.
two stories to end with
(John 8) The story of the Pharisees bringing Jesus a woman that was caught in adultery. And the say Jesus the law says we should stone her what do you think. and Jesus just sits and writes in the dirt. No one really knows what he was writing. But they continued to press Him. Jesus now what do you say. Jesus finally answer “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone” that is so important for us not to get on that high horse. we have to be gracious like Jesus with the woman at the well who had five husbands. There is grace at the cross for those who have blown it.
Then there is the story of Hosea and Gomer
God told Hosea to go and marry an adulteress wife. He marries Gomer at God’s command. They build a home and they have kids. Then one day Hosea comes home and Gomer has run off on him acting as a prositiute again. God tells him Hosea go and find Gomer and show your love to her again. So he goes to find her and he finds her in the slave market she has gone and gotten herself in so deep she is being sold to pay off her debts. So there she is ashamed in front of everyone. and men begin to bid for her. Hosea buys her back and he shows her his love again.
We look at that and go why would God have him go through that its an object lesson and here is the point
Gomer is us. the ppl of Israel that have been unfaithful to God over and over. and Hosea is God. it is a picture of God’s mercy towards us. We can never get on our high horse about how we are better than others when it comes to sexual or other sins. we must recognize that we are Gomer in this story. And Christ reached down in mercy..He reached down in grace He saved us, He forgave us, He redeemed us. He gave us His holy spirit so we can walk in the way of wisdom
